PRESS RELEASE…………………………………..…FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEBORAH BUTTERFIELD

RECENT SCULPTURE

      December 9th through January 28th 2006

The Edward Thorp Gallery will exhibit recent sculptures by Deborah Butterfield.  The show will consist of two large scale found steel pieces, two pedestal- sized found steel pieces, and two pedestal-sized bronzes.  This exhibit will run concurrently with an installation of three large bronzes on the Park Avenue malls between 52nd and 54th streets, through January 29th 2006, in cooperation with New York City Parks and Recreation.

Continuing her exploration of the horse as a sculptural form, the centerpiece of this exhibit will be two large dynamic found steel sculptures, one standing and one reclining. The artist has exploited mangled and twisted forms of red discarded industrial steel to expressive effect. Transforming the energy of this material in ways that reference her intimate knowledge of the horse, Butterfield is able to physically manipulate this material, often brutal, into sculptures of elegance and poise.

With the smaller bronzes and the large-scale bronzes on Park Avenue, Butterfield uses driftwood as the primary material. In one bronze on Park Avenue, the artist has set red and green found steel within the driftwood. These elements are cast in bronze and are given a patina recreating the appearance of the original material. This trompe-l’oeil technique imbues each bronze with a personality and mood determined by the artist. Each work is unique; the mould is destroyed in the casting process.

A nationally touring exhibition of the artist’s work is now on view at the Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach Florida through December 11th.
